Charles Bradley was a musician whose charismatic on-stage presence and soulful voice made him stand out. Bradley, who was born in Gainesville, Florida, in 1948, grew up in a musical family and was greatly affected by his mother, who sang in the church choir and played the guitar.
Bradley started out as a James Brown mimic in the late 1960s, going under the stage moniker “Black Velvet.” He performed across the nation, but he had trouble getting noticed and eventually gave up on his ambition to become a successful musician.
Bradley wasn’t found out until the late 1990s, when he was in his 50s, by Gabriel Roth, the co-founder of Daptone Records. At a Brooklyn bar, Roth overheard Bradley singing and was immediately impressed by his talent. He made Bradley an offer for a record deal, and the two got to work on his debut album, “No Time for Dreaming,” which was published in 2011.
The record was a commercial and critical success, and Bradley swiftly gained popularity in the music industry. He was well-known for his exuberant live performances, which frequently included dancing and audience interaction. His music, which mixed soul, funk, and blues elements, was dubbed “raw and passionate.”
Throughout his career, Bradley put out three additional albums, each one improving on the previous one’s success. He was nominated for a Grammy in 2017 for his album “Changes” and garnered a great deal of praise for his work.
